Chiropractic is a safe and effective form of manual therapy. The risks associated with chiropractic are much less then taking anti-inflammatory drugs and provides long lasting relief. The risk of serious injury is estimated to be 1 in 5 million, which means you have a better chance of getting hit by lightning multiple times then getting seriously injured at a chiropractor. The media focuses on the very few negative stories but if you look at malpractice insurance rates, chiropractors have some of the lowest rates when compared to any other member of the health care profession. This is a result of our careful and natural approach to treatment.
A chiropractic adjustment involves gently manipulating a specific joint in the body which is no longer moving and has become “stuck”. When joints don’t move they start to degenerate and this causes pain and inflammation. I chiropractic adjustment gets the joint moving again and allows the body to heal itself naturally. You may hear a popping sound when getting adjusted. This is only the release of gases from the joint and is similar to opening a can of cola.
Chiropractors must go through a 4 year Doctoral program following a University degree. This intense program focuses on Anatomy, Physiology, Diagnosis, Chiropractic technique and Clinical training. Following the completion of the program each Doctoral candidate must complete the national board examinations to be licensed. Chiropractic training doesn’t stop after school as each year we are required to complete a set number of courses in order to maintain our professional designation.
Chiropractors are primary care providers and as such, do not require a referral from your medical doctor. However if your medical doctor has any questions regarding your treatment with us, we are always happy to provide it.
Chiropractic care is not covered by OHIP, but almost all insurance plans have Chiropractic coverage. If you have been hurt at work you are covered by WSIB and if you have been in a car accident your car insurance will provide the necessary coverage.
